Having a special friend in the same class (Revised)
‘Tak kenal maka tak sayang”. People in Indonesia sometime say like that to their new partner when they want to get more information from them. It’s nice if we can know everyone’s personality. But it’s impossible because we are not an angel. For a couple who are falling in love sometime get troubles because haven’t or even don’t know about their partner’s personality. The student couples usually try to have the same class with their partner to avoid that problem. Apparently having a partner in the same class could be give some advantages.
If we are in the same class with our special friend off course directly we can work with our partner to study and do tasks which are given by our teachers. Doing tasks together can make our relationship with them closer. We also can make an appointment or even invite their house. We have more chance to share our problems especially about our lessons. When we have a problem, we can ask her/him to help us. If unfortunately we forgot our task, our partner would remain us about it. In addition it can improve our mark in class.
When we are in the same class with our partner we can know more about our partner’s habits because we can meet her/him everyday especially in class. Most couple always tries to cover their bad attitude. Not knowing our partner’s bad habits can lead to a serious problem at the end. In class, we can know our couple’s bad habit too. We can see directly if our couple is a boring person or not. We can know if our couple is a diligent or a lazy person from their attitudes in class.
It also interesting to know their relationship with other friends. We can see their personality when they are in front of their friends, if our couple is a good person or not. By knowing how our partner relates to others. We can compare their personalities with our personalities. So we also can decide if our couple is a suitable couple for us or not.

Moreover, it can serve not only as a telephone, but also as a letter (SMS) and for playing games. Now, cell phone is a popular thing in communication.

Many pepople prefer to use motorcycle to go back to their hometown
For many people who live separated with their family, holiday is time for them to spend their free time with their family. Especially in Idul Fitri holiday, most of them want to enjoy this special moment in their hometown. Eventhough, the public transportation was increase their cost, it still full with passengers. Alternatively, there are also some people who use their own vehicle. Many people prefer to ride a motorcycle than a car to go back to their hometown in Idul Fitri holiday because of some reasons.
From the shape of the motorcycle we can see that it does not need a large place to park. So, the rider can easier stop if they are getting tired. They can stop wherever they want. For example, they can take a rest on the side of the road. It will not disturb another people who also use the road because 1,5m square place is enough to park a motorcycle. For them who use a car, they have to look for a parking lot or another large place to park their car.
Another reason is, by riding a motorcycle people can avoid the traffic jam. In the Idul Fitri holiday, there are a lot of people who use the road. The main road will full of thousands car and it can released from the traffic. They can do nothing if they are jammed on the traffic. The Effect of Bali Bombing (revised)
Bombing is a familiar topic to discuss now. We can see it in the headlines of newspapers, in the news of television, even in the everyday conversation. United Nation is concerned about that and tries to fight against terrorism, especially to Moslem countries, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran. Since there was a suicide bombing explodes in Bali in October 2002, Indonesia has become one of the countries which United Nation is concerned about. That incident caused a lot of bad effects to Indonesia. If we see the effects, we can say that Bali bombing is an irresponsible action.
Firstly, Bali bombing causes a lot of people died and injured. More than 107 people died and 65 people were injured in that incident. Most of them were foreign tourists who still enjoyed their night and some Indonesian people who stayed in the cafe. When the accident happened, they tried to save their life, but the bomb damaged everything, even their life. In the tragedy of Bali bombing, there were a lot of victims who did not know anything until suddenly they lost their life.
Secondly, tourists do not want to come to Bali again after the tragedy of Bali bombing. They wanted to leave Indonesia, especially Bali, as soon as the accident happened. Suddenly, Ngurah Rai airport became full of tourists. They wanted to go back to their county which they thought is safer. They thought that Indonesia is a dangerous place to visit. They were afraid and they wanted to be away from Indonesia. I have read from the newspaper and found an article which showed about tourists’ comments about Bali bombing. One of the tourists said “It is the last time for us to visit this country.”
Also, Bali bombing makes the world has a bad opinion about Indonesia. Bali bombing brings Indonesia in the worst situation. The world does not believe in Indonesia again. A lot of countries in the world do not want to invest their asset to Indonesia. They are afraid if someday that tragedy will happen again and of course they will lose everything they have in here. The world says that Indonesia is a country which is full of terror and there are a lot of terrorists who are ready to kill people with their bombs. The world thinks that Indonesia is a dangerous country.

Almost people in the world love to listen to music. That’s why there are so many kinds of music. For instance, jazz music, classical music, Indy music, etc. Everyone have their own favorite music. They free to choose and listen it every moment they want to. In addition to that, your favorite music may be a reflection of your personality.
Many people love jazz music which is popular as the music of the slaves in America. Jazz music may reflect a person who has clear principle and very explicit. A person who likes jazz music knows if a key to play the instruments in jazz music is the same in every song. Because of the key will not change. So, it is the reason why people who like jazz music do not like change their principle and always keep their principle strongly. Yet, not only in keeping their principle, they could interpret their principle in their life.
Classical music might reflect a person who is independent and has traditional principle in his life. Classical music was developed from more than a century years ago. Every classical musician didn’t like to make a special key to play the music, but they have to follow some rules in playing that music. Yet, they still could play like as they want, it means they free to play it. If person have independent soul, they will choose this kind music. However, they still keep “old principle” like as old people ever had. It makes them become a conservative people.

My hometown, Salatiga is a small town near Semarang. There are 4 colleges in my town. They are Akademi Manajemen Akutansi (AMA),Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN), Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing (STIBA)and Satya Wacana Christian University (SWCU). Not all books are good for student (revised)
Many books are publishing in the world including in Indonesia. The publishers can’t choose what kinds of book to publish. They publish newspaper, magazines, comics and many books. Sometimes they sell books which aren’t supposed to be consumed by students. Some books aren’t good enough because sometimes the books contains a wrong opinion and give suggestions about what on the books to a lot of students to do like in the books.
One of the books may contain information about sex, porn, and erotic stories which are not educational. For example, newspapers and magazines such as Meteor, Playboy, Popular or FHM, they contained information about sex. There weren’t consuming to students. It is just for 21 year old readers and above. It can make they’re mind is full of negatively. And maybe the students doing like in the books.
Then, the other types of the books that aren’t supposed to be consumed to by students are about terrorism. We know that the last month, Indonesia have some problems with terrorism. They disturb and make a bomb to make people scare. And Indonesian people are disappointed because many terrorist are younger. The terrorist are thinking like that maybe they read a wrong book about Jihad and another books like that. They don’t know that it is a wrong way. They learn, but they didn’t know about the meaning of that.
The books are told about religion. If the books contains insults one another religion. Maybe one of the religions will be angry and make disturbing. They may disturb the followers of that religion. And it doesn’t make peace in the world. Or the books are good to read but we can’t learn it goodly like we read. The books like that is for the people are really knows about that.

Cats or dogs? (revised)
Most people think that having a dog is more useful than having a cat. They think that they can guard the house and we can teach them easily. That’s true, but I think a cat is better than a dog. Why? Here, I will explain why I like cats more than a dog.
The first one is because cats have a lovely face that makes me happy. Dogs’ face didn’t as cute as cats’ face. Every time I look at her face, I always feel happy, moreover when I feel angry or unhappy. On the other hand, I didn’t feel that if I look in dogs’ face.
The second reason is because a cat didn’t like to lick. I like dog if he don’t lick me. A dog usually licks us, moreover if he likes us. Of course I didn’t like that. Actually, it’s okay for me if a dog licks me, because I’m not a Moslem, but I think that’s disgusting and I really didn’t like it at all.

Everyone will change when they got into the work field even if s/he are basically a nice and kind s/he. People usually think that in the work field they had no friends. They are just living alone with their job and accompanied by their competitors. In the work field people just think about getting the promotion to her/him. They can use any kinds of ways to achieve their goals. Think about ourselves and become selfish is acceptable when we are in the work field, because if we don’t do that we can be defeated by the others. Being mean is needed in the work field.
First, in the work field we can say that we don’t had friends or even relatives, because sometimes they can be our biggest enemy when we compete with them they will do anything to defeat us. If we want to succeed we must and dare to cheat or we can say stab our competitors from behind.
Second, to get the promotion or achieve our goals we can use any kinds of ways. Even the ways we don’t really like. For example we cheated the job like we doing 2 jobs in 1 time or we work with other companies to get partners or more money. We can also sacrifice our friends to get closer with the most important people in our company.
The last thing that we must remember is that we are alone in the company, so we must think about ourselves only and forget the rest. We work to achieve something that is just for us and we don’t work harder for our friend. What comes in your mind at first when boys start enjoying spa treatment, wear fragrance, follows the latest fashion trend? Do you think Girly or metrosexual. Now, when I go to high class department stores and retailers, many of department stores are rearranging displays for the convenience of the department store male customers. The department stores are concern about the grooming. In the next, you as a reader will reveal what is caused boys that nowadays pay more attention to their appearance.
First of all, boys pay attention to their appearance to be more attractive. It happened when boys are looking for a girl. Of course girls expect if boys appear beautiful and smell good. Beautiful in here does not mean like a girl, but means neat. Besides that, nowadays many advertisements, movie stars influence youngsters to have a stereotype that good boys are the ones with good appearance. For instance, I can see from the football player David Beckham. In here, David Beckham always pays attention to his appearance. He is very fashionable, goes to saloon rather than barber shop. I read the article in Jakarta Post newspaper last year. However, of course it should be with certain limit. For instance, I had one bad experience with one of them. When we were shopping together, he was confused when he was trying to choose among five pairs of trousers. To me, they were all the same. Later, it took him ages to finish grooming. I stopped going out with him.
Next, boys want to keep their appearance to look good. In this case, for some boys they just want to look clean without being like a girl. For example, they go to the beauty salon to have their hair cut rather to the barber. They even have body care products in their toilet (face cleansing and moisturizing, sun care, and hair removal), they use it because of their needs, but some people will tease at him. Yet, it does not make them feel any less masculine or any less heterosexual.
The last, they are willing to push the traditional boundaries about being beautiful. It happens because for some people in old days they will say if boys pay more attention in their appearance they like girls. Still boys are very secure in their sexuality. They think it is not wrong if boys want to look neat, clean like what girls do, as long as it still has not cross the limitation. Being Rich is Annoying (revised)
There was a good movie entitled Richie Rich some years ago. The movie was quite interesting and many people loved that movie. It talks about a very rich family who lived in a glamour life. The house of the family was quite big and there’s a large private park inside the area of the house. They even had their own airplane which was ready anytime to bring them everywhere in the world. I recall a good scene when Richie bought his own island and he invited some good friends of him to the island. That’s a little picture of being rich. You will get everything you want if you have lots of money. Many people want to be rich and none wants to be poor. However, there are some reasons why being rich is bothersome.
Firstly, there will be lots of people who consider themselves poor who will ask for your help by giving them money. It will be annoying if you are asked to give the poor a help when they never work themselves. Sometimes they will just show up in an unexpected time, like when you are spending your time with your family in a park, or when you are eating your lunch in a restaurant.
Secondly, you might feel that everyone surround you is only interested in your money and it will create an insecure feeling. Supposedly that your friend offers you a help, you will think “what does he want from me?” Your friend may indeed offer you a help sincerely, but you will always have a negative thought about it. If such thing happened, then your friends will avoid you and no one wants to be your friend.
The last, you won’t be able to sleep well every night because you are afraid of thieves who will steal your wealth. There are many cases of thieves killing rich people to steal their wealth. Most of the thieves will do their “activity” at night when the owner of the house is sleeping. This will definitely make you to be a very careful person. A little noise in your yard will wake you up from your sleep. Even though you may have guards, you won’t be able to sleep well, because they can betray you anytime and steal your wealth. You will think that the only one whom you can put your trust is yourself.
It is true that many people will do everything to be rich. However, the question is, are you happy being rich? Considering the three reasons that I give you above, being rich is definitely not fun. Instead, it can be bothersome. So, do you want to be rich?

A Nightmare From The Raise of BBM
Indonesia, our beloved country, is a large developing country in Southeast Asia. It has lots of natural richness, but it also has lots of national problems. One problem that we face this recent time is about the raise of BBM price. It has been a big problem for the entire Indonesia, because every people feel the effect. The raise of BBM price has brought lots of negative effects especially to the lower society. There are some reasons why it can be these way.
First of all, the raise of BBM price is inappropriate. The increase of the price is too high or too sudden if it compared to people’s power of buying in Indonesia. Most of our people still have low power of buying for BBM, especially poor people. For example, the raise of kerosene price in almost twice than its price before. It is from Rp1.300 per liter up to Rp 2.800 per liter. It will be so difficult for poor people to afford it while they really need it for daily cooking.
The second reason is that the raise of BBM price has caused the raise of public transportation fare. It means that people should spend more money to go to somewhere by the public transportation. For people who is running a small business, especially the one that need transportation, it will be tougher to survive. For example, for some businesses they should raise the price to get some profits while the market is getting weak.
Thirdly, the BBM price has made daily needs price become more difficult to be afforded. It has made life to be so difficult for the lower society. Poor people should work harder to fulfill their daily needs. Of course it is if they have job. There was a good movie titled Richie Rich some years ago. The movie was quite interesting and many people loved that movie. It talks about a very rich family who live in a glamour life. The house of the family was quite big and there’s a large private park inside the area of the house. They even had their own airplane which was ready anytime to bring them everywhere in the world. I recall a good scene when Richie bought his own island and he invited some good friends of his in the island. That’s a little picture of being rich, you will get everything you want if you had much money. Many people want to be rich and no one wants to be poor. However, there are some reasons why being rich is bothersome.
Firstly, there will be lots of people who call themselves poor who ask for your help by giving them money. It will be annoying if you are asked to give the poor a help while they never work on their own. Sometimes they just show up in an unexpected time, like in a time when you are playing with your family, or in a restaurant when you are eating your lunch.
Secondly, you will feel everyone surround you are only interested in your money and it will create an insecure feeling. Suppose that your friend offered you a help, you will think “what does he want from me?” Indeed your friend offered you a help sincerely, but you will always have a negative thinking. Your friends will avoid you and no one wants to be your friend.
The last, you won’t be able to sleep well every night because you are afraid of thieves stealing your wealth. There are many cases of thieves killing rich people to stealth their wealth. Most of the thieves will do their “activity” in the night when the owner of the house is sleeping. The fact will make you a very careful person, a little noise in your yard will wake you up from your sleep. Event though you had guards you won’t be able to sleep well, because they can betray you anytime and steal your wealth. You will think the only one whom you can put your trust on is yourself.

My city, Salatiga is a small town near from Semarang. There are 4 colleges in it. They are AMA, IAIN, STIBA and SWCU. Between those colleges, SWCU is a better college than the others to study in my city. If you want to know further, you can see the following reasons.
SWCU is located in a strategic place than the others. SWCU is placed in Diponegoro Street. Diponegoro Street is a main road. It makes public transportation through it. So.. if you want to visit SWCU, you will not find any difficulties because the location is easy to be reached than the others.
SWCU provides modern facilities for the students to study. The modern facilities such as OHP, LAPTOP are used in studying learning process. It makes the students studying easily, because facility is an important thing when the students are studying.
The quality education of SWCU has been recognized in Indonesia. It is shown many people from many places in Indonesia decided to study in it. You can find Ambones, Balinese and many others. More over, you can also find foreigners who are studying in SWCU. It is rare finding foreigners who are studying in the colleges in my city except in SWCU. It shows that the quality education of SWCU is not only recognized in Indonesia but also in other countries.

Being mean is needed in the work field. Everyone will change when they got into the work field even he/she are nice and kind people. People usually think that in the work field they had no friends. They just living alone with their job and accompanied by the competitors. In the work field people just think about the promotion to her/him. They can use any kinds of way to achieve the goals. Think about our self and become selfish is acceptable when we are in the work field.
First, in the work field we can say that we don’t had friend’s even relatives, because sometimes they can be our biggest enemy. If we want to succeed we must and dare to cheat or we can say stab our competitors from behind.
Second, to achieve the promotion or goals we can use any kinds of way. Even the way we don’t really like it. For example we cheated the job or we work with other company to get something. We can also sacrifice our friends to get closer with the most important people in the company.
Last thing that we must remember is that we are alone in the company so we must think about our self and forget the rest. We work to achieve something is just for us and we don’t work harder for our friend. Even we so mean and cruel in the work field we do not need bring the attitude to the environments we living in. But most of people still think that in their house the still compete. With their neighbors, family, even with their own children. Because of that people in mostly big city that competing in the work field is usual, is selfish and stubborn.

Most people think that having a dog is more useful than having a cat. They think that they can guard the house and we can teach them easily. That’s true, but I think a cat is better than a dog. Why? Here, I will explain why I like cats more than a dog.
The first one is because cats’ face is cuter than dogs’ face. If you see closer maybe you’ll notice that dogs’ face usually looks cute when they were young. When they grew older, their faces look ugly or not cute anymore. Unlike a dog, cat’s face still cute no matter she’s young or old. And her face also can make you happy, anyway.
The second reason is because cats can love us back. It doesn’t mean that a dog can not. As you know, a cat is usually spoiled. It makes her really need affection from us. She always wanted to be loved. If we love her, she can easily love us too. That makes me conclude that a cat can easily return our love back than a dog.

The Effect of Bali Bombing
Bombing is a familiar topic to discuss now. We can see in the headline of newspapers, in the news of television, even in the conversation everyday that talk about bombing. United Nation concerns about that and tries to fight against terrorism, especially to Moslem countries, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran. Since there is a suicide bombing explodes in Bali in 2002, Indonesia becomes one of the countries which United Nation concerns about. If we see the effect, we can say that Bali bombing is an irresponsible action.
Bali bombing causes a lot of people died and injured. More about 107 people died and 65 people injured in that accident. Most of them are foreign tourists who still enjoy their night and some Indonesian people who stay in the cafe. When the accident happens, they try to save their life, but the bomb damage everything, even their life. In the tragedy of Bali bombing, there are a lot of victims who do not know anything until suddenly they lost their life.
Tourists do not want to come to Bali again after the tragedy of Bali bombing. They want to leave Indonesia, especially Bali, as soon as the accident happens. Suddenly, Ngurah Rai airport becomes full of tourists. They want to back to their county which they think that it is safer. They think that Indonesia is a dangerous place to visit. They are afraid and want to be away from Indonesia. Tourists said “It is the last time for us to visit this country.”
Bali bombing makes the world has bad opinion about Indonesia. They bring Indonesia in the worst situation. The world does not believe Indonesia again. A lot of countries in the world do not want to invest their investment to Indonesia. They are afraid if someday that tragedy will happen again and of course they will lose everything they have in here. The world says that Indonesia is a country which full of terror and there are a lot of terrorists who are ready to kill people with their bomb. The world thinks that Indonesia is a dangerous country.
As you can see, terrorists who do Bali bombing can not think further about the effect. They cause a lot of bad effect to Indonesia. They do something disadvantageous. A lot of people died, tourists do not want to come to Bali, and bad opinion about Indonesia, are the real bad effect of Bali bombing. Terrorists just want to do everything they want but they do not concern about the effect.

Many books are released in the world including in Indonesia. But many publishers can’t choose what kinds of book to publish. They publish newspaper, magazines, comics and many books. But, sometimes they sell books which aren’t supposed to be consumed by students. Some books aren’t good enough because sometimes the books are contain something and gives suggestion to a lot of students to do like in the books.

Aji: Read me
My name is Aji and I’m majoring English literature and language at Satya Wacana Christian University. My main interests are movies and music, it's impossible for me to live without them. I spend about 15 hours a day for listening to music and about 12 hours a week for watching movies. You may say I am a music freak but I’m not a musician. Well, I can play some music instruments but I am not that skilful player. I am tough as old boots. If I had dreams I would do anything to make them true, no pain no gain.
When first time I heard my teacher explained about using blogs for writing course I thought it was a good idea of hers. The typical teachers in my department will just give assignments and ask the students to submit them in their boxes, and my writing teacher used to do this. This blogs method is quite useful since everyone who has blogger’s account able to give comments to the students' works. It means that not only the teacher who could read and give any comments but also the other students and the“outsiders”. Speaking frankly we are bored with the old method of writing course, it is kind of unexciting. I believe if we started something unexciting we could not achieve something much as well. I wish with the new interesting method that our teacher given, we, the students would improve our writing skill. Any comment?

My opinion about using blogs in a writing course:
This is my first time using blogs in a writing course. Honestly, I know nothing about it, but when I try to use it, I can imagine how interesting it is. I can get more comments about my writing. Probably, I can also have some new friends, which give their comments. I can get more experience. So, instead of joining writing course itself, I can get knowledge of technology about using blogs. It really opens my mind about something new for me.

My Introductory…
My name is Sri Retnowati and you just can call me Retno or No’. Now, I’m studying at English Department, Faculty of Language and Literature, Satya Wacana Christian University. In my spare time, I like to watch television or just listen to the radio. I also like to chat with my friends to share all the information that we have, but the most wanted information is of course about a person that we admire. There is also something that I hate in this world. That is someone disturbs me when I’m sleeping.;)
My Opinion…
One of the subjects that I have is writing. Recently, the teacher makes a new method when giving the lesson. She asked her students to use blogs in this writing course. For me this is my first time using the method. In my opinion, I think this method is useful for students. The students will not be bored with the conventional method of teaching writing again. They also can learn more about their mistakes in writing by paying attention to the comments that they get.

The first and second tasks
Well, this morning I broke a nerve-racking news to the students of this class: they have to post their essay in this blog. That, I think, almost sent everyone to an instant heart attack :) because none of the students in the class had an experience of blogging before.
Yet, I'm so proud of my students because they took the challenge bravely, and I'm positive in any ways that they will produce interesting pieces of writing.
The first task that I set for them is to write a paragraph of their introduction containing their bio and a paragraph expressing their opinion of the use of blogging to publish their writing piece. The second task is an outline of their five paragraph essay, containing a thesis statement and three topic sentences. The deadline is this Friday at 10 AM (West Indonesian Time, GMT +7). Good luck, everyone!
To our curious, faithful and critical readers, we will appreciate if you can leave your constructive comments to the students' postings. They will have to write the essay on Wednesday next week at 4 - 6 PM, so we expect to get your comments by Sunday/Monday.
